Sixteen years ago the Kingdom of Winter was conquered and its citizens enslaved, leaving them without magic or a monarch. Now the Winterians’ only hope for freedom is the eight survivors who managed to escape, and who have been waiting for the opportunity to steal back Winter’s magic and rebuild the kingdom ever since. Orphaned as an infant during Winter’s defeat, Meira has lived her whole life as a refugee. Training to be a warrior-and desperately in love with her best friend, Winter’s future king-she would do anything to help Winter rise to power again. So when scouts discover the location of the ancient locket that can restore Winter’s magic, Meira decides to go after it herself-only to find herself thrust into a world of evil magic and dangerous politics-and ultimately comes to realize that her destiny is not, never has been, her own.
I love girlpower stories and ‘Snow like ashes’ by Sara Raasch is one of those stories. But because it’s set in a completely new fantasy world, it took me a while to get into the story. That’s more me than the actual story and Sara Raasch’ writing style, because I have to get to know the main characters and the whole world and that takes me a while.
Despite the fact that I saw the plot a mile away, I did enjoy Meira’s story from beginning to the end. The fact that Meira does whatever she wants and tries to prove herself was something I really liked. She’s very stubborn and that makes for fun and exciting situations.
Meira also has a lot of girlpower and I really dig that. I also loved the whole world in which ‘Snow like ashes’ is set, this world is bases on the seasons. I thought that was very original and makes for a great setting for the story. It kinda reminded me of ‘A court of mist and fury’ by Sarah J. Maas, but that’s a good thing as I love that series.
I’ve put the next books in the ‘Snow like ashes’ series on top of my wishlist because I cannot wait to see what Sara Raasch will have Meira do!
