Though we all know the feeling of hygge instinctively few of us ever manage to capture it for more than a moment. Now Danish actress and hygge aficionado Marie Tourell Soderberg – star of BBC 4’s 1864 – has travelled the length and breadth of her home country to create the perfect guide to cooking, decorating, entertaining and being inspired the hygge way. Full of beautiful photographs and simple, practical steps and ideas to make your home and life both comfortable and cheering all year round, this book is the easy way to introduce hygge into your life.
Hygge is hot. It’s the word for 2017 and I totally agree. Before I read this book about Hygge, I kind of expected Hygge and I would be a great combination. After reading it, I believe that we do. Hygge (pronounce it as huuge) is cosy, fun and homely, though no English word completely explains what it is, you just feel it.
In ‘Hygge’, Marie Søderberg explains what this Danish concept is and what you can do to be Hygge. To be honest, I didn’t only pick this book to read just because I wanted to know more about the concept, but I think the cover is gorgeous. In real life the book has specks of gold on it, which makes the bokeh effect even better and gives it some magic.
Anyways, enough about the cover, over to the inside of the book. Marie Søderberg not only shares her story and ideas about Hygge, she interviews other people as well. And all that is combined with recipes and very beautiful hyggelig photos, which makes the book a quick read. I’d finished it within a day, but it’s certainly a book that you keep on your coffee table to just flip through it once in a while.
What made me even more enthousiastic, was the Danish interior. I’ve always loved the Scandinavian style, with lots of white and natural materials, but after reading this book I really wanted to move and decorate that new house completely in the Hygge way. I would absolutely love that!
Hygge is something that happens in every country and is something for everyone. It’s mainly time with family and loved ones, really spending time together. Marie Søderberg explains Hygge quite well and I’m sure you’ll feel it at the end of the book. I love it!
