Will Trent is a brilliant agent with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. Newly in love, he is beginning to put a difficult past behind him. Then a local college student goes missing, and Will is inexplicably kept off the case by his supervisor and mentor, deputy director Amanda Wagner. Will cannot fathom Amanda’s motivation until the two of them literally collide in an abandoned orphanage they have both been drawn to for different reasons. Decades before—when Will’s father was imprisoned for murder—this was his home..
Flash back nearly forty years. In the summer Will Trent was born, Amanda Wagner is going to college, making Sunday dinners for her father, taking her first steps in the boys’ club that is the Atlanta Police Department. One of her first cases is to investigate a brutal crime in one of the city’s worst neighborhoods. Amanda and her partner, Evelyn, are the only ones who seem to care if an arrest is ever made.
Now the case that launched Amanda’s career has suddenly come back to life, intertwined with the long-held mystery of Will’s birth and parentage. And these two dauntless investigators will each need to face down demons from the past if they are to prevent an even greater terror from being unleashed.
‘Criminal’ is the sixth book in the series about Will Trent and boy oh boy, this was a good one. The story takes place in two different time sets, the one where Will works together with Amanda (currently) and the one where Amanda has just started her career with the police. Especially the last one is particularly interesting, as Amanda is one of the first female officers and her male coworkers aren’t too happy about that and will often sabotage her cases. But Amanda is convinced about her own instinct (and her partner Evelyn – Faiths mother) and wants to solve the case.
Because ‘Criminal is set in two different time periods, you’ll be switching between them. That makes that you can’t really read that fast, but then again, you’ll get more and more curious as the story continues. What really is amazing is that you get to know more about the history between Amanda and Will, and you get to know Amanda quite well. You’ll get why she’s become the person she is now. She’s had to fight for her position and that’s admirable.
Karin Slaughter has again surprised me with ‘Criminal’, because the history that is there between Amanda and Will was quite unexpected and because of that you get to know both characters (and Evelyn too) quite well. Other than that, the story has been put together so brilliantly and you’ll stay curious until the ending.
Yup, another book in the Will Trent series, but in my opinion one of the best so far. Because the story takes place in different times, you’ll stay entertained until the end. The reading may be a little slower than normal, but that fits the story. ‘Criminal’ by Karin Slaughter is another fantastic book in this series.
