Revenge is sweet, just like candy.
Candy Seaborne knows she’s badass. She takes after her father, an assassin and possibly a spy, although he won’t admit to either. She idolizes him. Her dream is to follow in his footsteps. But first, she has to finish high school.
Biding her time, waiting for real life to begin, Candy craves drama and isn’t above manufacturing some. If you’re a classmate who wronged her or a boyfriend who cheated, watch your back. She’s no pushover, and revenge may be her favorite pastime.
Jonah Bryson is the senior class heartthrob who breaks all the stereotypes. He’s a jock, but he isn’t the typical player. He’s moody and antisocial. No girl has gotten anywhere with him since his last girlfriend broke his heart.
Candy sees Jonah as a challenge and the perfect distraction. But she may be in over her head because unlike everyone else, Jonah isn’t buying her tough act. He sees the lost, lonely girl inside. He sees too much. When he looks at her that way, she wants to let her guard down and be vulnerable. But that’s the last thing she should do because her father’s world is spilling over into hers, and life is about to get real much sooner than Candy expected.
‘Like Candy’ had a bit of a slow start, even though there were intruiging elements in the story, which made you keep on reading. Candy has a bit of a weird past, because she lived with her aunt and uncle instead of her father, after her mother died. Her father has this mysterious job, which is very intruiging and makes you keep guessing what it is exactly what he does.
Jonah is the usual suspect and it’s no surprise that Jonah and Candy fall for each other, but still, who doesn’t want a bit of romance in a book, right?
All in all, Candy’s life is a bit weird and that helps to make the book interesting. At times it did feel like it was dragging on a bit, because you know something is going to happen, but Debra Doxer keeps that tension going all throughout the book, right up until the ending.
In the last couple of chapters there’s a little more action, followed by a whole lot of action. The ending makes you want to scream, because dang, I wanna read the next book! I sat there with my mouth open, in shock.
I would’ve liked to see more of a story at the start of the book, it felt a little bit dragging at times, but it’s all leading up to a big bang at the end of the book. Totally looking forward to reading the next book!
